'Heathlands School Arts Award Celebration
On 10th October 2019, Akhtar Zaman DL attended Heathlands School Arts Award event to mark Artsmark’s national celebration for arts and cultural education. Artsmark is the Arts Council England’s award for schools and educational settings that champion the arts and strive for excellence.
Heathlands provides outstanding education for deaf children from the age of 3 years to 16 years, encouraging each child to achieve academically, develop independence and to contribute positively in their communities.
The film KS3 students made was screened followed by a live skills-share, where the Arts Award students taught the younger students the skills they had developed.
Akhtar Zaman DL spoke of the importance of the Arts in education and also shared a little of his technology background. Also in attendance was masterclass professional, Ashley Kendall, who spoke of the importance of developing creativity.'

The event started with a whole school assembly with invited guests including from 'Into film', who funded our first film project at Heathlands in 2016.
Four project leaders presented the background to this project. They showed photos of the whole group's journey and we watched the film they made.
Students then taught acting, directing and camera work to specific groups of lower school children.
Our co-Headteachers, Mrs Shields & Mrs Reeves-Costi, led the assembly.
Some year 10 and year 11 students studying creative iMedia at GCSE shared some photography skills they have prepared to lower school children. This included using manual settings and how to frame the subject in the scene.
Students shared editing skills they had developed using the school's apple mac. The lower school children discussed the new tools they were demonstrating and tried this out for themselves.
Students shared skills they had learned using Apple keynote to create and animate a story. Some used apple pencils too. Next, the lower school children tried this out for themselves.
